Cosmos plants are popular as they are easy to raise from seed, and ‘Purity’ is no exception. The ferny foliage is the perfect backdrop for the graceful pure white flowers- that can grow up to 4inch or more in diameter! They make a perfect filler plant within a sunny border, just remember to deadhead regularly and it will produce an abundance of saucer-shaped blooms from early summer to mid autumn. They are very easy to grow and make a perfect addition to a cutting garden.
Sow your seeds from March to May at a depth of 3mm in good seed compost and cover with a fine sprinkling or vermiculite. Place inside a propagator at a temperature or 18-25C or seal inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet and do not exclude any light as this will aid with germination which can take up to 15 days.
When your seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions until they are large enough to plant outdoors. When your plants are well established and there is no more risk of frost, acclimatise them to the outdoor conditions for up to 10 days. Plant outdoors with full sun and moist, well drained soil at a distance of 45cm apart. Pinch out any growing tips and this will encourage the stems to branch and produce more flowers.
